Whilst poking around at the local Goodwill outlet, I stumbled across a few toy cars meant to hold dolls of various sizes. There was something about them that struck me as somewhat odd, namely that they were all equipped with seatbelts. Seatbelts? In a toy? You're kidding me, right? I tried to latch them, but it was a pain. Perhaps if my hands were smaller...
Are children really this impressionable? What's next, airbags?

It would be kind of cool if they were race cars with 6 point harnesses

Makes them more lifelike I guess.
When I was about 5-6 I had a favorite water gun. This one:
Laramie Uzi, baby!

I could get behind that, especially if the car had a roll cage.

yeah definitely, that's a great time to instill safety for them. Kids are exceptionally impressionable. How else is Gung-Ho supposed to stay in the car when I'm launching it off a ramp?
Also you're way behind, I had one of these way back in 1992. It has airbags and crumple zones.

If I was a child, I'd play with barbies just to play with that

Yes, they are.

its less about being a safety matter and more about being like mommy and daddy. Why do you think they sell toy vacuums and dolls that pee themself

Not having any children of my own (to the best of my knowledge), I thought I'd give them a little more credit, although in retrospect it may not be warranted.
I remember riding in a bean bag chair in the back of the family van, so obviously safety wasn't really a big concern in our household. It was only when I started to follow Formula One and thought that I might become a racing driver that I started to buckle up all the time, just like my heroes on the track did.

Way back when, at an age where she was still playing with Barbie dolls, my sister acquired a big plastic model of a VW Rabbit. Mom drove a Dasher, I wanted a Scirocco, and my sister wanted a Rabbit as her first car (until she saw the nightmare that was my Rabbit GTI and wisely bought an Accord..) With a little cutting in strategic locations, I modified that toy Rabbit for her with some cool T-tops and cutouts into the engine compartment for the doll's legs. A little striping here and there, some LEDs and flashlight bulbs for lighting and some white paint to turn the wheels into the then-cool RWL variety and she was the envy of all of her friends. Barbie didn't need a stinkin' Corvette or Ferrari when she could be zipping around in a cheap German econobox...

I hear you. My sister had a bunch of Barbie cars back in the day, and IIRC none of them had seat belts. Then again, it was the early 90s.
